History of Hidimba Devi
What is the relation of Hidimba Devi with Mahabharata?
Hidimba Devi belonged to the Rakshasa clan who lived in the Himalayan forests with her elder brother Hidimba. Devi Hidimba and Bhima met when the Pandavas sons and their mother fled from the burning palace to the forest.
In the forest, Bhimsen fought with Hidimba Devi brother Hidimb in which the demon Hidimb was defeated. Hidimba Devi impressed Bhimsen with her beauty and powers and proposed marriage to him.
Story of Bhima and Hidimba
There is an interesting chapter in the Mahabharata that tells the love story of Bhima and Hidimba Devi and their marriage. While wandering in the forest, Bhima, along with his mother Kunti and his brothers, met Hidimba Devi. Although Hidimba Devi belonged to the demon clan, she gave up her demonic qualities and chose to live as an ordinary woman because of her love for Bhima.
Impressed by Hidimba Devi’s devotion and true affection, Bhima accepted her and married her. From their marriage they had a son named Ghatotkacha, who later played an important role in the Mahabharata war.
Story of Hidimba Devi’s fast and sacrifices
Hidimba Devi has made many sacrifices for her love and duty. After marriage, Bhima went on his journey with his mother and brothers. But Hidimba Devi decided to stay in the forest and raise her son. Hidimba Devi single-handedly performed the duty of a mother and made Ghatotkacha a brave warrior.
Hidimba Devi’s fast and sacrifice show her greatness and strength. She dedicated her life for her husband and son and set an example of an ideal woman and mother.
